Alexander Crawford, Jr., was born in Skowhegan, Me., educated in local schools, and worked on the family farm before enlisting in the 21st Maine Volunteers in 1862. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Port Hudson, La., May 1863; after recouperating and serving his allotted months, he enlisted in the 31st Maine Regiment and fought in Grant's Overland Campaign of 1864.
